What Is Complication Insurance for Treatment Abroad?

If a complication develops after surgery abroad, who pays for the treatment? For Canadians travelling for planned care, the answer is usually the patient: standard travel insurance excludes trips taken for medical treatment, and provincial health plans do not pay for treatment a patient chooses to receive abroad, or for complications arising from it.

Complication insurance is a policy made for this situation. It is designed to help with the additional medical, travel and accommodation costs that follow a covered complication of a planned procedure abroad, alongside standard travel benefits.

Specialised International Travel Insurance for Travel Accidents or Illness Including Coverage for Medical Complications

Maple Med Global partners with Custom Assurance Placements Ltd., who administer the Global Protective Solutions (GPS) programs. GPS is a specialist provider of insurance solutions for international medical travelers. International medical travel requires unique and specialized insurance. Standard travel insurance has an exclusion for travel undertaken to receive medical care.

In addition to the travel accident and illness coverage, benefits have been expanded to include medical complications for an elective procedure when travelling to another country for care. This specialized coverage can assist with unexpected costs associated with an unforeseen complication for up to 180 days past the procedure date. Coverage is available on a worldwide basis.

Coverage Options

  • Coverage levels: The policy is offered at different coverage levels, which differ by the amount allocated to treating a complication. Higher or lower coverage can be selected according to the policyholder's preference and budget; the premium is based on the level selected.

  • Coverage after returning home: Coverage can extend to complications that arise in the destination country as well as those that arise after returning to Canada. Home country coverage can be removed at enrolment if preferred.

​

  • Multiple trips: For treatments that may require more than one trip, such as dental implants and IVF, additional travel dates can be added to the application.

​

  • Travel companion: A travel companion accompanying the treatment trip can be added to the policy.

​

  • How payment works: The policy works on a reimbursement basis. Expenses are paid first, and the approved amount is then reimbursed to the policyholder.

The policy is open to application for a wide range of planned medical and dental procedures. Procedure groups listed on the application form include:

  • Orthopedics: hip, knee and shoulder replacement, arthroscopy, ligament surgery

​

  • Urology: prostate surgery, kidney stone treatment

  • Eye care: cataract and glaucoma surgery, LASIK, intraocular lens implants

How Enrolment Works

1. The application form is completed online. The first page can be filled in with estimated dates and without passport details in order to see pricing.

2. The second page displays coverage levels and pricing. A level is selected and payment is made.

​

3. The policy is issued for the confirmed treatment date and hospital and sent by email.

 

The policy is issued by the program administrator and is governed solely by its terms.
