By comparison, for patients whose need for surgery is already established, a surgery date can often be offered within 1 to 2 weeks in many destinations. Exact timing depends on your case and on hospital scheduling.

Will my provincial health plan (OHIP, MSP) cover treatment abroad?

As a general rule, no. Provincial health plans do not cover planned treatment abroad; exceptions are narrow, require prior approval, and are generally limited to situations where the treatment is not available in Canada. We recommend obtaining written information from your provincial plan for your own situation.

Who pays Maple Med Global? Do I pay a separate fee?

In most destinations, patients do not pay Maple Med Global a coordination fee; our revenue comes from agreements with partner hospitals. Coordination for Germany and the United States is provided under a separate written agreement that sets out a fixed coordination fee and all terms, and you receive this agreement before making any payment. In every case, every item you will pay is shown clearly in your quote.

How do you select partner hospitals and physicians?

Selection starts with the physician, not the hospital. Once your specific condition is clear, we research experienced specialists in that field, evaluated on their international training and experience, their academic publications in the relevant treatment area, and their case experience. The institutions where these specialists practice are then ranked by service infrastructure, accreditation status, international patient experience, and patient satisfaction; quotes are requested from the top-ranked institutions and presented to you. These institutions hold international accreditation (JCI, Accreditation Canada, or equivalent) or are leading university hospitals in their countries. This evaluation is supported by a physician and hospital database we grow with every case.

What happens to my deposit if I decide not to proceed?

Cancellation terms are tiered by timing. Within 48 hours of your deposit payment, you receive a full refund. After 48 hours, and more than 15 days before your surgery date, a 250 CAD coordination and processing fee applies; any hotel, transfer, or insurance services already paid from your deposit are subject to the cancellation terms of those providers, and the remainder is refunded. Within 15 days of the surgery date, no refund is made; if a documented medical reason prevents you from proceeding, the previous tier's terms apply. You may also reschedule your surgery date once free of charge, subject to hospital availability; date-change fees from third-party bookings such as hotels or insurance are passed on at cost. Payments made directly to the hospital are subject to the hospital's own policy. Refunds are issued in CAD on the amount paid, within 7 business days. Coordination for Germany and the United States is governed by a separate written agreement. In all cases, the exact terms that apply to you are those set out in your quote and the documents you sign.

Does regular travel insurance cover planned treatment abroad?

Accepted Answer

Generally, no. Standard travel insurance is designed for emergencies such as sudden illness or accident; as a rule, it does not cover pre-planned treatment or complications arising from it. This is why complication insurance exists as a separate product. We still recommend standard travel insurance for your trip, and for any companion travelling with you; the two products cover different risks.

What about follow-up care when I return to Canada?

The most common challenge for patients treated abroad is uncertainty: physicians in Canada naturally need complete information when taking over care they have not seen firsthand. Maple Med Global addresses this through reporting. Your treatment is documented in detail in communication with the hospital, and you return to Canada with a complete English file you can hand to your family doctor and have added to your health records. This removes the uncertainty around procedures performed abroad, and your follow-up can continue in Canada without interruption. Online follow-up appointments with your treating physician are also coordinated.

Can I claim treatment abroad on my Canadian taxes?

Medical fees paid abroad to licensed medical practitioners and hospitals can, under certain conditions, be claimed under the federal Medical Expense Tax Credit; for travel and accommodation costs, the general condition is that equivalent treatment was not available where you live.
